Excellent television marred by stupid design decisions

Review Date: May 19, 2010
Reviewer: Craig Hollinshead,
As many other reviewers have stated, this is an excellent LCD television. The picture and sound quality are outstanding, set up is straightforward, even when connecting the television to the Internet for use with services such as Netflix. When combined with a Bluray player, A/V receiver, and some good speakers you have a top of the line home theatre setup.

However, the high quality of the television is marred by the fact that Sony has chosen to put most of the HDMI ports on the side of the television and HAS REVERSED THE ORIENTATION OF THE HDMI PLUGS. The orientation of the plugs mean that they are only compatible with upward oriented right angle HDMI adapters. Consequently you either have cabling sticking out from the side of the television or you must buy Sony's overpriced HDMI cabling, as the orientation of the plugs makes them incompatible with virtually all right angle HDMI adapters as they are DOWNWARD oriented. Even the flat right angle adapters will not work, as they will mask some of the HDMI ports. Additionally, using a regular cable in the side ports and tying the cable back will result in stress on both the port and cable, leading to one or the other breaking.

It is a shame that Sony's incompetence in handling design details (or their desire to sell customers overpriced HDMI cables) has marred an otherwise fine television.
SONY KDL-Z5100 40 inch flat screen rocks!

Best picture quality I have ever seen! Awesome vivid colors! 240mhz refresh rate rocks ! Speakers so-so. Hook up to surround sound system higly recommened for home teathre experience. Sony blue ray hook-up awesome. I highly suggest all hook-ups to use monster HDMI cable. Unit has five HDMI ports. Monster HTS 350 good idea to protect 3,125 joules protection. PS. Newegg best price.
Glad I waited

The biggest TV screen I had until I bought this TV was 20". When I got the Sony 40Z5100 it was like another world. I didn't see Avatar at the theater, stupidly, so when I saw it on this 40" TV I was blown away. I very well may have been extremely happy with any TV of this size after having just a 20" for so long, but this Sony is great and HD was made for baseball. I just have cable, will never go back to DirecTV because they lied to me, but even with cable this has been a fun experience and I'm glad I waited for the price to go down. People shouldn't give anything a low rating because they aren't happy with their buying experience. It's not the TVs fault.

Reviewer: Peter Grogan, Washington USA
Cool look, slight down side is that many cable connectors such as HDMI 2, 3 and 4 are on the side at height, making them hard to hide from some angles. Good multi purpose remote and the picture/sound are pretty good. Excellent for HD sports. As it is dual voltage it is ideal for peopel who travel outside Europe.
Happy customer

Reviewer: R. Rosen, Westwood, Ma
For years I had been checking out flat screens and waiting until I felt that they had evolved to point that I would be satisfied. I made sure that not only blacks were deep black but also different shades of black, I waited until fast motion in the picture were was no longer a blur or that the picture frame didn't break apart. I was leaning toward the Samsung line, the 6 series and up when I came upon reviews for the Sony Z series. I took a chance without seeing the flat screen and going by the reviews of other salespeople who had seen it and I wasn't disappointed. The picture is so good that you could almost tell that the only thing better was going to be the next great thing in evolution would be 3D. The picture is so clear and seems so accurate in High Def. that you couldn't want for much more. The Sony Z series is an LCD TV, I just didn't feel comfortable with the LED's just yet the colors seem untrue but I'm sure in time they will become great but for now I couldn't ask for better. This TV lives up to and exceeds my expectations. Live sporting events feel as if you are there and HD movies are great though there seems to be some differences in the quality of the film picture which you probably wouldn't pick up on if you were viewing a tube TV, which I don't believe is the Z series fault it is more of a testament to how good it is. If you buy this TV you will not be dissappointed. I would also like to point out that while I went on Amazon.com they directed me to another vendor which had this TV for less. Kudos to Amazon.com for their openness.

1080p LCD TV

720p uses progressive scan display, so that all calls will be displayed in a row, but has less to show. Even with the reduced resolution, but it shows that progress can often produce better image quality 1080i. Like other sporting events are broadcast in 720p, are moving more and look better in 720p.

When you have the right or 1080p television? Is not necessary. The simple truth is that there are some 1080p now. Almost all broadcast TV is 1080i, and even high-definition consumer video camera records at 1080i. But always good to have a good technology integrated TV codec deinterlacing 1080i to 1080p by two sets of lines. You should verify this. Make sure your TV is 1080p. The contents are generally interlaced 1080th content for a better, but still not good to have a true 1080p signal characteristics. In fact, the place that you get a 1080p content on Blu-ray Disc e. is now dead HD DVD format. Some manufacturers offer limited content in 1080p display their products and the potential savings that you can have air-year-old with 720p or 1080i TV will disappear. We recommend buying a 1080p TV will display the best image quality is more sources of 1080p content.

Sony Bravia hd 1080p

In little more technical with 1,080 models 1080p television signals, from top to bottom line. “P” indicates that the cable is the way forward dispayed means all lines are displayed at the same time, 60 seconds. It is contrary to the true 1080th display two sets of 540 lines alternating quickly prove that every thirty seconds. The 1080i signal is much more at ease during the second series of frames have changed and this will create some strange looks rough interlaced TV.

Pro TV back

Select TV after pictures projected on screen behind the TV. A little ‘as a small theater inside your TV. The opposite of this is that they are relatively cheap to produce, but downside is that they have a good view and Jumbo. Advanced Television projection is much less after the old, but still larger and larger LCD and plasma are against the market. The image of modern television, after the two technologies: projection LCD or DLP (Digital Light Processing) projector.

LCD TV power projects of the rear projection TV, liquid crystal through a managed control electical signal light while the cross. Televisions DLP devices use micro-mirrors, which includes the Board of anger array of digital imaging. Stay on monitoring the amount of light is shot images on the screen. Color produced in two ways, both on the tooth color wheel are filters of red, green and blue or using three separate chips, producing a primary red, green or blue each.

After imaging, television in general much more expensive to manufacture advanced display and flat screen LCD or plasma. DLP projectors produce a better job, especially blacks and color accuracy. They also have views of large dimensions. Negatives of photos of TV screen size later. Even if they have become more subtle in recent years, remain above normal and thicker LCD and Plasma and can be attached to the walls. This made them less popular than other TV technologies.

Top-Notch Video Performance
The XBR KDL-52XBR4 is a 1080p television with a full 1920 x 1080 resolution, the highest resolution available for the sharpest, clearest picture. The KDL-52XBR uses the most recent HDMI 1.3 interface, which houses both audio and video signals in one connector and has the bandwidth to support the data needed for the high resolution. Sony's Bravia Engine Pro Full Digital Video Processor upconverts all video signals to 1080p so you can watch all your old DVDs on this glorious display.

Sony complements the high resolution with the latest technology in color reproduction. The KDL-52XBR is a 10-bit display with 10-bit processing. Most panels are only 8-bit. The added bit depth here means a larger color palette for more faithful color reproduction and smoother transitions from one color to the next. Additionally, the display also supports the new x.v.Color standard, which dramatically increases the available color space. The end result is a picture that is so detailed, colorful, and vibrant, you'd have a hard time distinguishing it from real life.

The KDL-52XBR4 features Sony's Motionflow technology, which automatically adjusts for and applies the proper processing for optimal motion reproduction depending on the video input. This includes support for 24 frames per second (24p) video, which displays video content at the 24-frames-per-second rate at which it was originally filmed or recorded. With 24p, you get the most faithful possible reproduction of the original.

A Wide Variety of Inputs
This Sony television's wide variety of inputs ensures compatibility with your other home theater components. There are three HDMI connections for Blu-Ray, HD DVD, and other technologies requiring the high bandwidth, and two component video inputs, three composite video inputs, one S-Video input, one PC Audio and Video input, and five analog audio inputs. Even with a collection of legacy components, you shouldn't have a problem connecting to the KDL-52XBR4.

Stunning Looks
The KDL-52XBR4 not only displays stunning video but is itself a head-turner. It features Sony's unique floating glass frame along with a black bezel that can be interchanged with optional color bezels to match the display to your decor.

Outstanding Ergonomics and Simplicity of Control
Sony's Xross Media Bar interface is an award-winning, intuitive on-screen display that makes setup a breeze, with menus and controls logically laid out for quick access. The KDL-52XBR4 also features Theatre Sync technology, based on the HDMI-CEC standard, which means you can easily connect to and control compatible devices. For example, when the KDL-52XBR4 is connected to a compatible DVD player, you can turn on both the DVD player and the television and start playing a DVD with a single push of a button on the remote. When you're done, another push of a button powers everything down. With Theatre Sync, you can spend time enjoying the movie rather than waste time setting everything up.

More Than Just a Television
Because more and more people expect to view photos on their HDTVs, Sony developed a Photo TV HD mode that optimally sets the sharpness, gradation, and color to make digital photos look like printed photography.

The KDL-52XBR4 is backed by a 1-year limited warranty for parts and labor.
